Taking User inputs not from CIW window

Hi,

Is there option to take input from user while the window other than CIW is active/selected?

In my case I want to take integer input from user while working on layout editor without requiring to type in CIW window i.e when I press bind-key and then the value with enter, the value should be stored in the variable defined in my bind-key.

Thanks in advance.

Whenever you type something on the keyboard there must be some field  that has the keyboard focus and "captures" this input, otherwise the input doesn't go anywhere  and is simply lost.
So how about you create a "mini" form with just one integer input field to get the users input. The bind key pops up the form and hitting return stores the value in a the variable of your choice.

    Hi mbracht,

    Thank you for your reply.

I will take a look on mini form creation.

    Here's a suggestion for a solution:

    (defun collectInput (varName)
          (hiDisplayForm
             hiCreateAppForm(
                ?name    (gensym)
                ?formTitle  "My Form"
?callback   (lambda (theForm) (set varName theForm->intFieldSym->value))
                ?fields     list( (hiCreateIntField
                                     ?name    'intFieldSym
                                     ?prompt  "Enter Something:"
                                     ?editable t)))))

    (hiSetBindKey "Layout" "<Key>F8" "(collectInput 'myVar)")

The above code brings up a from with an integer input field and whatever number is enetered goes to the global variable myVar.
