How to print a layout into a vector based file format (like SVG and EMF)?

Alex Liao

Hello, I am looking for a vector-based output file format for a layout view. I was using EPS and it worked well for inserting eps into MS Word, however, MS does not support EPS insert function any more according to the article "Support for EPS images has been turned off in Office".

Any idea for printing file in SVG or EMF?

Thanks,

Alex

    Hi Alex,

Cadence tools like Schematic and Layout editors do not support SVG exports as far as I know, I just checked and there is not such option. Your best bet is to print your layout into an EPS then use an online converter to make an SVG out of it. I'm sure there is a CCR at Cadence to support SVG, it might help to file another ticket for them to append your request on it.

    Riad.

Thank you so much RiadKaced. Actually I tried using the conversion from EPS to SVG by an online cloud converting service and it took a long time, 10 minutes or so. The converted SVG file is large, like 20M, while the original eps file from Cadence is just 1M. When inserting the converted SVG file into the MS Word, the response of displaying such a huge SVG file is quite slow. I am not sure what happens if Cadence provides an SVG output, and if so, is the size of such an SVG file going to be smaller or what. Thanks anyway.

We (Cadence) support SVG generation from ViVA graphs, but not from schematic or layout. There is an enhancement request (in fact there are several) asking for this. There are some challenges doing this because of some raster-based optimisation in the drawing engines, but it's worth filing another request since this is increasingly important since the dropping of EPS support in Microsoft Office.

    Regards,

    Andrew.

Thanks Andrew, looks like worth trying the VIVA stuff. Actually I got a good luck by successfully inserting EPS in MS Word on my old computer (disabled the automatically updating of system patches long time ago). Well, I am all set now. People get used to using their old way to do things : ). If you could provide a link or a tutorial of using VIVA here, that might be helpful for others who happen to see this thread.

    Regards,

    Alex

    Hi Alex,

Not sure it really needs a tutorial. Simply use ViVA to plot your graphs (from ADE, for example) and then use File->Save->Image and choose the "Files of Type" cyclic to be "Scalable Vector Graphics (*.svg)". Pick the other options as you wish for the graph. For example, here's one I just created:

    Hi Andrew,

I think you were talking about here. I just showed part of the pop-up option window where the .svg is there. However, if I want to get the layout printed out in .svg, that's not supported in Candence yet, right?

I showed CIW, ADE, and layout editor in my second picture. Just want to print that inductor layout. Thanks.

    Regards,

    Alex

    Hi Alex,

As Andrew mentioned, exporting SVG is only supported in the ViVa tool for now, it is not supported in the layout Editor. These are 2 different tools. You cannot export an SVG from the layout editor as of today. Please file an enhancement request to Cadence as we suggested.
