Toolbar text changing with status

Hello,
I'm creating a custom toolbar and I can't find the way to create a text that changes depending on the status. i.e. the "show selection info" toolbar, or when the "selected" numbers change in the status bar.

    I've tried a few examples here in the forum but I couldn't find the way.
    I have a toolbar.il that I can load my custom toolbar properly but I can't place it in the toolbars list to enable/disable it.
    How do I load it as any other toolbar?
