Any function to see upper levels as well as lower levels when you want to use dbGetTrueOverlaps?

Hi,

The function dbGetTrueOverlaps works when I'm in the top level I opened whether it's a cell or a block that has some levels of hierarchy.

But it doesn't work when I'm in the Edit in Place mode. I think it's because the function can only see the lower levels. So I'm wondering if there any function that I can see overlaps with the upper levels as well as the lower levels.

Thanks,

You're probably passing the wrong cellView to dbGetTrueOverlaps. If you're passing geGetEditCellView() then you will indeed start from the EIP cellView and go downwards. You could instead pass the result of geGetWindowCellView() which is the cellView for what is being displayed in the window rather than what is being edited. If you also need to pass a bounding box to the function, you'd need to translate those points using geEditToWindowPoint() to translate them into the top cellView's coordinate space.

Thank you for your explanation Andrew. Now I get a clear understanding of the difference between geGetEditCellView()  and geGetWindowCellView().

But I should've put my words differently. It works in EIP mode but just doesn't see the upper levels but lower levels and sounds like the function only sees the lower levels.

    Thanks,
    Jane

    Jane,

I don't think I quite understand what you're saying is the problem here. The dbGetTrueOverlaps can only find shapes from a given cellView downwards - if you tell it the cellView of the surrounding window, then that will then see the hierarchy levels above you - but maybe that's not what you want.

    Hi Andrew,

Oh now I get it. Will try geGetWindowCellView() instead.

    Thanks,
