Read Orcad Data?

I have been tasked with integrating Orcad with an ERP database.  The ERP database is a SQL Server database and I have no problems writing to it. However I am clueless on where to go to read Orcad data. What type of database is Orcad stored in? Where is it stored?  Is the data open source or would I need special licensing to read the data?

Any insights appreciated.

  • What are you expecting to get from the schematic that could require direct reading of the schematic data? Chances are that you just need the Bill Of Matreials (BOM) to load into the ERP system for the product build, you can get this as tab delimited text, or converted to Excel, from Capture.
  • If I export the BOM to exce or tab delimited textl, I'll have to manually key it into the ERP system.  This is what we would like to avoid.  Hence the need to directly read the BOM data in Orcad.  So how can I read this data?  What type of database is it? 
  • If you are up for persuading an ERP system to read foreign binary data whose format is not public, surely, reading a format like text, or Excel, is going to be many times more trivial?

  • Yes, it would be very easy to read text or excel, however as I explained already, I do not want to go through the extra, not to mention, manual step of creating this data, I want to read the bom directly from the orcad database.

     So can you actually answer any of my questions instead of trying to talk me into using text or excel?

     What type of database is this?  (Binary is not a database type by the way)

    Where is this data stored?

    Is this open data that I can easily connect to using ODBC for eaxample?  You said "whose format is not public", which leads me to believe the answer is no. 

     Is it a propritary database? If so does Orcad sell a database connector?

    No, there is no "database connector". Cadence now recommends using the TCL / Tk coding interface for third parties who want to extract the design data, this capability is included since the 16.3 release. (This will consume a product license to run the code)
