spectre RF Noise-Aware PLL Methodology

Hello all,

I recently heard about the PLL Noise-Aware Design Flow and was eager to try it out myself. Unfortunately, I have only limited documentation (a document by Helene Thibieroz named Using Spectre RF Noise-Aware PLL Methodology to Predict PLL Behavior Accurately") and did not manage to extract the required models for the VCO and the PFD. In fact, if I open my ADE, the options "SKI Plugin for PLL Macro Model" is not visible at all. My software versions are: Cadence IC 6.1.3 and MMSIM 7.0.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Kind regards,

Jens

    Hello Jens,

I wrote and presented this document and would be more than happy to help you being successfull using SpectreRF PLL flow. Do you have an internal wrapper to configure your design environment? Can spectre feature file be accessed from IC environment ?

I can also be contacted directly at helenet@cadence.com

    Best regards,

    Helene

     Hello Helene,

I was wondering whether the PLL-Noise-Aware flow will include a macromodel for a VCO which allows for two tuning voltage inputs, i.e. for a dual path PLL.  Is there a way of altering the current macromodel to include two paths?

    Thanks,

    sven

    Hello Sven,

Using SpectreRF VCO macromodel, you can sweep three sweep variables: Vtune, Vdd, Vss.  For two tuning inputs, you can use Vdd or Vss as one of the tuning control but you can't check the interference from Vdd or Vss.

Hope this helps, let me know if you need anything else.

    Regards,

    Helene

    Hi Helene,

Just following up on this thread on how to get spectreRF Noise Aware PLL methodology. I searched cadence's website and found this pdf http://www.cadence.com/rl/Resources/conference_papers/ctp_cdnlivesv2007_Thibieroz.pdf. Looking at the slides, I noticed that the environment option on slide 9 is different from what I have the version of cadence (IC6.1.4.500.9) that I am running now.

How should I set up my ADE to get the Noise-Aware PLL to work properly? At the moment I am encountering the "Unable to find VCO plugin in simulator library directory PLL Macro Model will be disable".

The MMSIM  version that I am using is 10.1.1.029.ISR3

    Regards,

    Su Lim
