Exporting .gds file from cadence

Did you try reading the manual? There's a whole manual in the help (use the Help menu in the tools) on Design Data Translators which explains how the stream interface works and how to set it up.

I am reading the manual. Can you please tell me how do the gds file look? is it a binary file,text file?

It's binary. The detailed description of the format is in an appendix of the manual.

I did follow the steps listed in the manual. I could generate the gds file without any errors but when I open that file it looks very weired .

This is how my log file file looks like

But my gds file when I open it in word pad is not a binary file . 

I am not sure what I am missing

You may want to think about filing a service request at this point.

Then we'd be able to take a look at the stream file and check it. You could also attach it to a post in the forum - it sounds as if it is small and doesn't contain anything too sensitive - just a small number of shapes.

But a service request would probably be best.
