PAE Contour

Hi,

I am trying to design CMOS PA at mm-wave frequency by Cadence. I already set up the simulation to draw Pout contours by Load pull method. Now, my question is that if Cadence has this ability to draw PAE (Power Added Efficiency) contours or not? I already know the other software programs like ADS has such a capability of drawing PAE contour.

Moreover, as you know, the input impedance and therefore the input power does not remain constant as a result of load variation. Could you please help me figure out how to set up my simulation for the transistor to be driven by the maximum input power as long as the load impedance varies? Obviously, if this situation is not resolved, the output power contours is not valid.

Thanks.

If you take a look at the RF workshop supplied in the MMSIM installation: <MMSIMinstDir>/tools/spectre/examples/SpectreRF_workshop/rfworkshop.tar.Z . If you unpack this tarkit (tar xvfz rfworkshop.tar.Z) and then look in the doc/PA.pdf you'll see a worked example of loadpull. If you run this simulation, you can then on the direct plot form use the Power Added Efficiency function, and check the loadpull contours checkbox:

You're prompted to pick the appropriate terminals - click on the PORT2 terminal, then PORT1, then VCC (there's a section on plotting PAE earlier in the document too, although not for load pull, but the instructions on how to select the outputs are there).

    Hope this helps!

    Regards,

    Andrew.

    Hi Andrew,

I am using the PAE contour plotting function recently and found that the tool works sometime and sometimes it does not work. All the node voltage and current have been saved.  Attached is the error message. Could  you please shed some light on it? Thank you.

    Jeff,

Not easily. I suggest you contact customer support so that an application engineer can look at the issue with you (it's pretty hard to tell from the message alone why it can't find the data it needs).

    Regards,

    Andrew.
