Port Noise Error?

Hey all,

I am using version IC6.18-64b.500.12 with the Spectre version Version 19.1.0.428.isr9 64bit. This is an ADE L simulation.

I am trying the noise figure of a mixer using pnoise. My LO frequency is the main pss harmonic, and the RF input is the small signal.

The port is just a regular 50 Ohm port, with the source type being set to DC. In the pnoise simulation, the input port is the RF port. No matter what box I check (or temperature I put in) in the image below, I keep getting this error:

    WARNING (SPECTRE-16437): Input signal PORT6 contains no noise. NF and F become infinite.

I just want it to present the noise of a 50 Ohm impedance. I have looked through the SpectreRF workshop files for 19.1-18.1-17.1 and I'm following the instructions. Does anybody know what might be causing this error? I even read the port manual and I have no idea what might be going wrong.

    Hi Hazal,

    You shouldn't need to enter a temperature in there - the default is to use 290K (although if you specify the temperature, it's in Celsius) - given that this is the temperature of the port generating the noise, which is deemed to be "off chip" and as part of the virtual lab equipment, it wouldn't normally be at the circuit temperature.

    That said, this wouldn't cause the port to generate no noise. The only things that would do that would be if you set the noise temperature to absolute zero, or set it to not generate noise, or used the noiseon/noiseoff parameters to disable noise from this component.

    Can you please show:

    1. The instance line for the port in your input.scs
    2. All the options and analysis statements from the bottom of the input.scs

    I believe this is the information you wanted:

    I realize that noisetemp here is set to some value, but I get the same error when the field is empty.

    I ran with a simple cut-down netlist adding this to your options and analysis statements:

    It runs with no problems. Can you please post the entire spectre.out log file (probably as an attachment to the post)? It might give a clue as to why it thinks this port is noiseless - it seems very strange to me.

    Please contact customer support - this seems to be something peculiar to the test case you have here as I cannot reproduce it, and cannot see anything in the log file which gives any clues. Even if I explicitly disable the noise from the port (e.g. using the noiseoff_inst option), all that happens then is that it doesn't compute F or NF but doesn't complain about it. So something else is going on. Also, using noiseoff_inst/noiseon_inst shows up in the log file, so it must be something else...

    I found some very old issues related to this (long fixed) and these were bugs (it was only a couple of reports from many years ago though).
