Orcad X Presto vs Orcad X PCB Editor licensed features mismatched ?

Hi,

I have just upgraded my license from Orcad professional to Orcad X professional. On my workstation, I have uninstalled SPB_17.4, and installed SPB_23.1 HF2.

Cadence is now offering two options for PCB editing: Orcad PCB editor and Orcad Presto.

I have studied to new features in Orcad Presto. The most interesting for me, are the added features in Constraint manager. In the electrical constraint set, I can now define rules for vias, relative propagation time and Return path.The new electrical cset are very valuable features for high speed design. There is also a new 3d spacing tabs. I am very grateful that Cadence is adding these features on the lower cost licenses (Orcad vs Allegro).

Cadence says that Orcad Presto includes everything that Orcad PCB Editor can do. Maybe I am not familiar enough with Presto but there are many little functions that I can only find in Orcad PCB Editor. Therefore I will work most of the time with the older interface of Orcad PCB editor.

But it seems there is a problem with the feature licensing. The constraint manager in PCB editor, does not have any of the new electrical cset features Only the new 3d spacing constraint are included.

An interesting fact: if the new electrical cset are set first in Presto, then if I open the design with Orcad PCB Editor, it will honore the new cset rules and flag any drc from them.

Does Cadence plan to harmonized the features supported between Orcad PCB editor and Orcad Presto?

    Hi gvellet. OrCAD X Presto offers a new innovative UI that excels in its ease of use. It is also fully compatible with Allegro and OrCAD PCB Editor. You mention that there are some functions you can only find in OrCAD PCB Editor. Would you mind sharing what it is that you can't find and maybe I can guide you in it.

    Hi Juan,

    Here are a few functions in Orcad PCB Editor that I cannot find in Orcad Presto.

    tool-> derive connectivity

    tool -> topology extract

    analyse -> workflow manager -> impedance workflow

    display -> vision manager- route vision

    I think Orcad Presto is a great time saver by reducing the number of mouse clicks while routing a PCB.  Correct me if I am wrong, Cadence plan is to keep alive both GUI (Presto and PCB editor). If Orcad Presto does not have all PCB editor functions is OK, it keeps the menus lean and clean. I can always go to PCB Editor for the special functions. I have opened a ticket to ask Cadence for an enhancement to harmonize the feature sets enabled in both constraint manager (Presto and PCB editor).

    Best regards

    I am also wondering how to access these features, mainly 'derive connectivity'. I get traces that were routed from pin to pin, but later get disconnected after I change the schematic from capture. It's laid out correctly, but I cannot get the traces on the pins to connect again.

    Hi,

    Since a year ago, Presto was improved. In release 24.1 S003, Cadence has added two of the missing features stated in my message:

    -topology extract in the constraint manager

    -impedance workflow in the view -> panels -> Analysis Workflow

    But the "derive connectivity" feature is not there yet. However you should not need to use that feature when just doing a simple sync from schematic to PCB. Perhaps, something "not normal" is breaking the connectivity (change in symbol pins#, change in footprint pin # or change in connectivity). Hopefully tech support can help you.
