How to create polygon shapes at any angle in OrCAD X Presto

Have you ever found yourself in the situation where you're drawing a polygon shape in OrCAD X Presto and realize that you can draw only a few specific angle? In case you didn't know, there is a way to enable odd-angle or draw polygon shapes at any angle. Keep reading to learn how.

You can add the shapes in OrCAD X Presto by clicking on "add shape" icon in toolbar. Select the "Polygon" tab in the dialog box that appears and start adding polygon shape.

Polygon offers three different options of shapes as line, Tangent arc, and perpendicular arc. Heads up Display feature has been included in OrCAD X Presto for Length, Angle, Radius, Parallel Segments and Vertex snapping.

You can press the Shift key to enable the 'any angle' functionality while drawing polygons. By default, only 0-, 45-, and 90-degree angles are enabled.

This is so frustrating that the tool was released without this capability. It makes it incredibly difficult to use polygons.

One thing I've found in this tool is that simple shapes make for better pours. You can start with a a rectangle and then try to use the Right click > Edit Boundary command to cut it down to the desired shape.

Other times the combination / alternation of dragging a center point (between two vertices) and then pulling a vertex will get you the shape you're looking for.

Finally, you can create several small pours that are laid out over each other and then merge them (or not) to get a superset shape that you're interested in. Good luck.

Hello Kyle, yes I understand your point on this totally! The shapes aspect was clearly missing some obvious things in the initial launch two years ago.  Since that, multiple updates have been implemented including the handles selection feature & shape vertex manipulation, enhanced snapping modes, temporary and relative grid movements etc.. We are very happy to work with you to consider any ideas or concerns you have in a constructive manner.

I see your company already has a support account with us which means you can launch these enhancement or fix requests through ask.cadence.com. Please reach out there by launching a case. We can have a dialog on this together and launch any agreed requests on your behalf.
