How to add component tables to CIS

Hi,

I started to build my CIS database in January of this year. So far I have a couple hundred components. Most of them fit in the default component categories like ICs, Caps, etc. However I have some others for which I would like to have their own table. For example, DC-DC converters, and other more specialized parts like GNSS receivers and radio modules. Etc. For now I´m keeping them under Transformers or Misc, with subcategories, but that is not ideal.

Ii CIP designed to expandable that way?, or, what would be the recommended way around if we are stuck with the handful of build in tables?

Yes this is possible. Open CIP with Admin privileges then go to Admin - Configuration and on the Component Views tab edit say CIP_Misc then add a new view DC-DC Converters then confirm. This adds a new table view (called DC-DC Converters). You can then add parts etc as you would normally. To see this in CIS make sure you edit the dbc file (Options - CIS Configuration) and enable the table and relevant properties to be transferred to the design,.

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for the clear explanation. If I had figured out how to add a table, certainly would have spent a lot of time scratching my head trying to find out why I can't grab those components with CIS.

It will take some time to master all this tools, but I'm happy that I switched (back) to OrCAD.

PS: I still have on my shelf the original manuals of MS-DOS OrCAD and TangoRoute.

    Some more questions Steve,

This actually adds a new view to an existing table. It does not create a new table. I'm not sure what is the advantage of doing this. I am already creating subcategories withing the tables providef by means of the Part Type field. So, back to the original question:

is it possible to add a new table to the CIS database rather than add views to existing ones?

    Other question,

Where exactly is the dbc file located?, Looking at  Capture -> Options -> Extended Preferences -> CIS the only relevant option is the check box Query All Configured Tables

Sorry but adding a View is the only method and if you consider any updates from Cadence realistically its the only way. If custom tables were added any updates would be almost impossible. Not sure why this wouldn't work for you though because if you look in CIP and CIS it does look like an additional table. The dbc files are usually stored in install_dir\CIP-E\Configuration_Files (so for mine it's C:\Cadence\CIP-E\Configuration_Files. This may be on a server where CIP is installed. You can configure it under Options - CIS Configuration.
