How to copy-paste symbol with footprint, part# etc from one design to another?

Have been using ORCAD capture for a few months now so I am relatively new to ORCAD. The question below may therefore be silly (apologies) but I tried getting a resolution to this Q from another experienced user before putting this here.

I have Project 1 from which I wish to copy a schematic over to Project 2. I find that if this schematic is one of multiple identical occurrences, then in opening one and copying the page or individual symbols to Project 2, information about footprint, part numbers etc. are not copied over. How can I copy over all properties (knowing that RefDes will of course change)?

TIA - Ram

    Yes you can.

Open both projects in Capture. You can copy and paste the entire sheet or select specific symbols.

Copy and paste them from your old project to the new one. You should update your entire symbol cache on both projects first.

On your pcb, go into placement mode. Select the components you want to copy, right click a component and create a reuse module. Follow the promps to select additional copper and components.

When finished with the reuse command it makes an .mdd file. Copy that file to your second board.

Open your second board and place your components (doesn't matter where).

Go into placement mode and select all the components, right click a component and find the modules sub menu, the filename that you copied in should be listed. Select that item from the list, update any component matches as necessary.

You can use the reuse module within the same design or across designs. Th he cadence help docs are pretty good if you need more details.

You can also create schematic reuse modules if you plan on reusing your design elements in several places. You can attach both the schematic and layout to the module.

    Hi Eric,

Thank you for the detailed instructions. However the first two lines pertaining to Capture (which is where the issue is) do not work when I try to copy and paste across projects. I tried updating the Design Cache using "Clean Up Cache" but no luck. I'll look up the Reuse Module stuff but that will be of limited help since I don't want to create Resume Modules when I just need to copy a part or two from one design to another including footprint etc.

    Best - Ram

Using the clean up cache removes symbols from your cache that are no longer in your design. You need to select all the symbols in your cache, right click and update.

The reuse modules are useful for replicating the placement and routing of components on the board. If you dont need that then just placing the components would work.
