ORCAD Trial v17.4.19.0 - Installer issue fix

OrCAD Trial Installer v 17.4.19.0 was failing to install correctly on Windows 10 Pro, despite meeting system requirements, the user having administrative privileges, and Anti-virus not blocking the installation. It would run and show the initial splash screen, which would disappear and eventually the process on Task Manager would disappear too.

Looking at the Event Viewer a general .NET Runtime error of the following was observed after an attempted install:

| Application: OrCADTrial.exe
| Framework Version: v4.0.30319
| Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.
| Exception Info: exception code e0434352, exception address 00007FFA94844F69
| Stack:

| Faulting application name: OrCADTrial.exe, version: 17.4.19.0, time stamp: 0x60ddad69
| Faulting module name: KERNELBASE.dll, version: 10.0.19041.1503, time stamp: 0xb2acaea9
| Exception code: 0xe0434352

| Faulting package full name:
| Faulting package-relative application ID:

.NET Framework was on the latest version and no other faults were found, even on a completely clean installation of the OS.

I discovered a fix that allow a user to get the log in/download screen.

  1. Run the installer after download as you'd expect, let it disappear from the screen and its process from Task Manager.
  2. Navigate to AppData (Windows explorer>clear the address bar and enter    %AppData > hit return).
  3. Navigate to \Roaming\Cadence\OrcadTrialInstall
    1. [OPTIONAL] Right click on 'OrCADTrial.exe', Properties, go to Compatibility Tab, click 'Change Settings of All Users', Tick 'Run this program as administrator', Apply, Ok. Then OK out of Properties.
  4. Move, Rename or Delete 'OrCADTrial.exe.config' (config file that contains .NET framework version checks, hashing out the config or editing it causes the install to fail, removing it from the file structure or renaming seems to be the only way to make it work, RECOMMEND RENAMING)
  5. Run OrCADTrial, it will generate it's Install log and mfp.dll and show the log in screen.
