Component Information System in OrCAD Capture: CIS-1

Most of the companies have a corporate parts database, and designers should use approved/preferred parts from the database only. This assures availability of parts for manufacturing along with many other advantages like keeping the component cost in check.

It is a great convenience for schematic engineers if they can directly place a part from their corporate database without worrying about its availability, cost, and other aspects. If it is available for use in the database, it is a good-to-go part.

Capture Component Information System (CIS) is a part management system that integrates your parts database to the schematic design tool. CIS shows your database tables within the tool, and you can directly place parts from there in your design.

Any ODBC-compliant database like MS-Access, MS-SQL, MySQL, SQLite, MS-Excel, etc. is supported and works flawlessly with CIS.

You can configure CIS to transfer any or all properties associated with a part to the schematic when you place the part. CIS maintains a link to the database part so that you can retrieve other part properties at any time. Linking placed parts to your preferred parts database gives you access to complete part information during the schematic design process.

We will discuss more about CIS and its capabilities in future posts. Look out for the next post on CIS to learn more about it. Meanwhile, you can refer to this document on Cadence Learning and Support Portal which explains configuring a database with CIS.

This database can be configured in OrCAD Capture CIS and can access the tables and corresponding parts.
