Capture CIS Unusably Slow

Hi,

I usually use Design Entry HDL which works fine for me.  I now have to do a time urgent project to modify some boards which were designed in Capture CIS.

I've got it installed and the database set up ok I think, but it is unusably slow, I can't get any work done.

It takes over an hour to open my project and over 20 minutes to switch between schematic pages.  Even just bringing down e.g. the Edit or View menu is over 1 minute.  The 'thinking' circle next to my mouse pointer is constantly flickering even when I'm not doing anything with the software.

Initially I thought this must be a problem with my libraries etc being stored remotely and me trying to work from home over a VPN. But even with everything stored locally on my office PC with the libraries installed on my C:\ drive it is this bad. (it was worse when working remote: >2.5hrs to open schematic)

Any clues why I'm having this problem?

Cheers!

My understanding is your OLB files are only read if a new symbol is not in the current DSN cache or you ask it to update any or all symbols in the project DSN file.

After you open Orcad/Allegro CIS, <ctrl>-<alt>-<del> and then launch Task Manager.   The first screen will tell you what your CPU, Memory utilization is at.

Wondering if you are running out of free memory so it's swapping to disk.

Hi, it doesn't appear to be short of any resources:

CPU, Disk and Memory usage are all low. There is some Ethernet traffic but if I'm looking at this right, it isn't a significant amout and it's not coming from Capture CIS?

Meanwhile the Capture CIS is frozen for over an hour while it loads my project.

How can I make sure all of my symbols are in my design cache? I've taken over this project from someone else at a different institution so they've sent me the project files and their library.  I've set up the library locally and configured the data source etc to find it but perhaps there is still an issue with it trying to load each symbol from the old library location at the other institution?

    Thanks.

According to the software engineers on my team, the best course of action is to uninstall and reinstall.  It can take days to figure out the root cause.  Months ago, something happened and Allegro service packs started to take 24 hours or more to install on a machine very similar to yours.

The installer would only use one thread and never pushed above 20% CPU utilization.

Uninstall then 2 hours to install the base and 2 hours for the latest patch, solved the problem.  Don't forget to scope the install to the apps you have licenses for.
