Synchronization between CIS database, schematic design and layout footprints

Hello,

We are currently using a CIS database (managed using a PLM software), Capture with CIS, and OrCAD PCB Editor Pro ; 17.4 S035.
We would like to find a way to synchronize a schematic design to the CIS database and to check whether the footprints used on the layout are the latest in the library.
Let's say we are designing a schematic, we use a component from the CIS database called PN001 rev 1.0. The netlist is generated and sent to the PCB editor. During the design phase, someone working on another project finds out that there is a problem with PN001's footprint. He updates it, not knowing that someone else is working on another project using the same CIS part. PN001 now has a new revision, PN001 rev 1.1, with a new footprint design (using the same name as the previous one).

Currently, when working on a schematic design, we have no way of knowing whether the CIS parts used are the latest in the database or not, the only way is to manually check each CIS part in the PLM to be sure it is the same as the one in the design ; that is not practical at all.
On the layout side, we cannot know if the footprints currently on the design are the latest in the library without updating every symbol on the board, which again, is not practical at all.

Is there a way to check, in Capture, that the database part revision used in the schematic is the latest in the database ?
Is there a way to check, in PCB Editor, that the footprint file being used in the layout is the latest in the footprint library ?

Thank you

You could try and look at OrCAD EDM (additional software purchase. This has an EDM validation process so when you check in a board it looks at the approved libraries and compares this to the ones in the board file. There is a video showing this on parsyseda youtube channel and look for OrCAD EDM Design change and validation.

Hello and thank you for your answer. Never heard of that software before, it looks very interesting. I am a little surprised that something like this (at least in a basic form) doesn't come standard with the Cadence OrCAD/Allegro serie but at least it exists Stuck out tongue

I see from the parsyseda video that you can check the validity of footprints with this software. I didn't saw a demo showing this same check but between capture and the CIS database but I will look into this.

    Thank you Steve !

Sorry for Capture and the CIS Database, Part Manager will always check to ensure that the latest properties are shown on the parts in the design. You can also use the Part Manager option to verify parts against OLB libraries.

EDM checks in the schematic library and can generate a promoted library location, the capture ini file will reference this location. New to OrCAD EDM is to Verify the Part Status.

So some is in CIS already, some you may need OrCAD EDM.

    Hello,

I checked all the different licences I have available with CIS, and none of them had this option. Here is my Tools menu :

But looking for this I found the part manager, that seems to be able to do something similar. Still didn't figured exactly how to use it but I am checking it.

    Thank you again.
