How to assign refdes to hierarchical blocks?

Assigning a reference designator to the components in a schematic is very crucial, as it helps in uniquely identifying each component in the schematic. It helps designers to quickly locate the part and test specific part details to resolve any issues observed, by maintaining consistency and standardization across the schematic.

While working on complex hierarchical designs, do you find it difficult to assign a reference designator to the hierarchical blocks?

Annotation assigns a refdes to all parts which are set as 'Primitive'. By default, hierarchical blocks are set as 'Nonprimitive'; hence, they will not get annotated with the default settings.

In OrCAD Capture, while performing annotation, you can include these non-primitive parts as well to assign refdes to them.

Go to Tools > Annotate and enable the Include non-primitive parts check box.

Hope you find this feature helpful while working on complex schematics.

Regards,

Yugandhar.
