Creating Parts

I am not able to navigate to Component Explorer to create a part using the methodology given in the tutorials.  In the tutorials, the "M" hotkey should open Component Explorer but that doesn't work. The tutorials also show browsing to Component Explorer the path, Place > Component Explorer, but at Place, I don't get a Component option (only Part, Wire, Bus, Junction  etc.

Which version and license of the tool you are using at your end?

I tried with OrCAD X Capture 24.1 ISR 3, I am able to see Component under Place menu.

Also, shortcut M is working at my end.

    I am using OrCad_Capture_CIS option + OrCad_PCB_Designer  17.4-2019 SO18 (3945310) [5/16/2021] Windows SPB 64-bit Edition.

This is what I see under the Place tab:

Effectively, I can not create new parts.

I am a new user at this company.  No prior users are still with the company.  I am stuck.

Your 17.4 Hot Fix S018 is too old. (This might be one reason). The latest one is S040. Can you migrate to 23.1, where this comes native?

I no longer have a 17.4 installed and I am not sure if this feature is coming installed by default or not. I tend to think not.

Copilot tells me this (take it with care, might not be true):

In OrCAD Capture 17.4, you can access SamacSys and Ultra Librarian libraries, but they are not natively integrated like in OrCAD X Capture. However, you can still use them by manually downloading and importing components.

Steps to Include SamacSys & Ultra Librarian in OrCAD 17.4:

    1. Activate Search Providers

      • Open OrCAD Capture 17.4.

      • Go to Place > Search Providers.

      • Sign in with your Cadence and Ultra Librarian credentials if prompted.

    2. Search for Components

      • Select the SamacSys or Ultra Librarian tab.

      • Enter the part number or keyword in the search bar.

      • Choose a component and view its properties.

    3. Download & Place Components

      • Click the plus sign to download the schematic symbol, footprint, and 3D model.

      • The part will be attached to your cursor—click to place it in the schematic.

    4. Verify PCB Footprint

      • Open the corresponding PCB layout file.

      • If no layout exists, create a new one via PCB > New Layout.

Place > Search Providers is an option for me under the Place tab, but I need to create parts in my library.  As I understand from the tutorials, that is done using Component Explorer which is initiated from Place > Component Explorer.  However, under my place tab, there is no Component option.

    Are these tutorials for 17.4?!?

Also, are they for OrCAD or Allegro?

The tutorials I have reviewed are for OrCad 17.4.  I think that Place > Component > Component Explorer is not there because some librarian related workflow is intervening.  There must be a workaround.

There isn't anything missing or intervening. The Place>Component menu is not available with the 17.4 version, it wasn't introduced until the 22.1 version. In any case, as others have mentioned, creating Parts through the Place>Component menu uses the Search Providers to obtain Schematic Parts and Footprint data from online resources. If you want to create a Schematic Part "from scratch" in 17.4, use File>New>Library, to start a new Library and add parts, or use File>Open>Library, to open an existing Library and add parts to that.
