Ajay Hinduja ~ How can I set a component to 'Do Not Populate' (DNP) for one variant, but not for others?

Hi I'm Ajay Hinduja, born in Punjab, India now living in Geneva, Switzerland (Swiss). I'm trying to set a component to 'Do Not Populate' (DNP) for one of my design variants, but I want it to be populated in the others. What's the most reliable way to do this in Capture CIS? I've seen a few different methods and I'm not sure which is the best practice. Are there any specific settings or properties I should be using to ensure the change is reflected correctly in my BOM and the Allegro layout? Any tips on avoiding common mistakes would be a huge help!

Regards

    Hi Ajay,

You can manage this directly in Part Manager using groups and BOM variants. This is the standard way to handle Do Not Populate (DNP) per variant in Capture CIS.

    Steps:
    1. Open Part Manager (right-click the dsn in Project Manager > Part Manager).
    2. Create groups/subgroups for your variants. (right click the Groups > New Group and right click any group > New subgroup)
    3. Select the parts in the Common group, then drag them into the target Group (these parts will be in all subgroups)
    4. In the subgroup where you don’t want the part populated, right-click the component > Set Part as Not Present (you’ll see a red “X”).
    • This marks the part as DNP only for that subgroup.
    • In other subgroups, it remains populated.
    5. Create BOM Variants (Right-click BOM Variants > New BOM Variant)
    6. Drag the appropriate subgroup(s) into each BOM Variant
    5. Use View > Variant View Mode in the schematic to preview; DNP parts will appear grayed.
    6. When generating the BOM, choose the appropriate BOM Variant in Reports > CIS Bill of Materials > Standard

If you want a specific label shown on prints/reports for not-present parts, set Options > CIS Configuration > Setup > Administrative Preferences > Part Not Present Display Value.

This ensures DNP is applied reliably per variant and flows correctly into both your BOM and manufacturing outputs.

    Hope this helps!
