OrCAD Capture CIS 16.6: Display properties for all passive parts

Hi all,

I apologize if this is the incorrect category for this post, wasn't sure where to ask a question about an older product. So, my company uses OrCAD Capture CIS 16.6 and I am trying to finish up my schematic. For most of my passive parts, there are certain properties I wish to display such as power rating for resistors or voltage rating for capacitors. I know how to display these properties for one part at a time, or even multiple parts by manually selecting several resistors together and then going into the part properties and displaying what I want.

However, this is a fairly tedious if I needed to manually select every resistor, capacitor, etc. on each page of a large design so I was wondering if there is a way to simply select all of a certain type of part (resistors for example) and display the desired property with one action. I thought I would be able to do this by right clicking my schematic or design file in the file explorer window and then selecting "Edit Object Properties". This allows me to see all my parts in my design and from there I can easily select the "Power Max" property row if I wanted to update my resistors, and then I press the "display" button to bring up the display dialog box. Unfortunately, that is where I am stuck as the tool does not allow me to open the "Display Properties" window if I invoked the "Property Editor" from other than the schematic editor page. See attached image for error message.

I understand that using an older tool, there may just be some quality-of-life improvements I am missing out on, but I feel that something like this doesn't seem too advanced and would be included. Thanks for any help!

-James

Capture does not allow changing the visibility of any property at the design level. You can change the visibility of any property at the schematic page level.

    Hey Jeet,

Thanks for the reply. So, it sounds like you're saying that it will require manually selecting each part one by one and displaying the properties I want?

I used to use Design Entry HDL at my previous job which had its own issues, but it did have the capability to do global property edits which included displaying them.

Its a bit more manual than DE-HDL but it is possible on a page by page basis. Open a page, window select all objects, then right click - Edit Properties, choose the Parts tab and then for the property you want to display right click on the Property Name and choose Display. Set what you want to see and click OK and that is then displayed on the page. Repeat for each page. But going forward it would be better to set this for new designs in the library for each part.

    Hey Steve,

Thanks for the reply. Yea I came to that method as well and it is a bit faster. But yea, setting that up in the library to begin with will definitely be the path forward. Thanks!
