ORCAP-1616 INVALID REFERENCE

Hi,

Using Allegro Design Entry CIS 17.4. I created a heterogenous part with 12 sections in a library and I am using it on my schematic. I placed 4 instances of the part. Reference(s) are: J301A, J301B, J302A, and J302B.  Designators are numeric (-1 thru -12). Each section has 16 pins. I manually changed the part reference value to "J301A" etc. and Orcad auto-fills the designator as it should.

DRC keeps coming up with ORCAP-1616 "Reference is invalid for this part".

What am I doing wrong?

    Hi TM202601138148 ,

The Reference you assign must always end with a number.

When the reference ends numerically, Capture can correctly build the Part Reference:

    • For numeric sections: J301-1, J301-2, etc.
    • For alphabetic sections: J301A, J301B, etc.

If you try to make the Reference itself end with a letter (like J301A), Capture treats it as invalid. This causes conflicts and leads to DRC errors such as ORCAP‑1616.

    Hope this helps!
