What do ^ and ! mean in Intersheet References? Can they be removed?

I noticed that OrCAD Capture adds ^ and ! symbols in Intersheet References by default. I assume they indicate whether the referenced page is above or below the current page, but I'm not sure what their exact purpose is.

Can someone explain what these symbols mean? Also, is there a way to remove them if they're not needed? Has anyone customized this behavior in their designs?

The caret symbol (^) indicates that the signal exists one level higher in the hierarchy. An exclamation (!) symbol indicates that the signal exists one level lower in the hierarchy.
