String length limit on property value?

I've been trying to set value of a string property by axlDBAddProp() in Allegro 16.2 and 16.3. When the value is less than 1024 char, the value can be set successfully. However, if the value is 1024 char or longer, the function returns nil and the value cannot be set. I wonder the limit is on the function or the property? Is it possible to set a string property to a value longer than 1024 char? Thanks.
