store shell command result to variable

Dear All,

Is there a way to store the dbstat result to a variable.

I can store the value to a file and readin  say  dbstat -v assy4_assembly.brd >ver.txt

But I am thinking something as below if possible

Shell_cmd  = strcat("dbstat -v " axlCurrentDesign() ".brd")

Ver = shell(Shell_cmd )
