finding common area between 2 layers in a layout

Hi all,

I'm trying to write a SKILL code to find common area between two layers in a layout, using dbLayerAnd command, but the problem with this command is that, it creates an object in the layout and hence edits it, but I don't want to edit the layout

dbGetOverlaps also works with bBox, is there any other way to find the common area between the two layers other than the long iterative  way of comparing the coordinates of the layers?
