Some STEP Files Don't Work

mckeen
mckeen over 10 years ago

I am trying to use the 3D step package mapping capability in Allegro (16.6 S038), but find that many step files don't work.  I am downloading step files from 3dcontentcentral.com.  I find some work just fine, but others do not show up in the mapping window preview or when in the 3D rendering of the PCB.  I am pretty sure there is nothing wrong with the step files because I am able to load and view them fine in Solidworks.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem or have any suggestions/workarounds?

Thanks

Do you have any specific examples? Sources like 3D Content Central are user contributed but usually pretty good quality nonetheless. You can occasionally get issues with incorrect units, like mm read as inches, this is quite rare but will definitely get some strange behaviour. Large, >35Meg, STEP files may cause issues but, again, these are not especially common.

Haven't had problems bringing STEP files into Allegro footprints but when I export a STEP file from Allegro and try to open it in Solidworks, Solidworks crashes everytime. Still not fixed in SW2015.

I was having this problem in the past.  Try changing the units in the step export window.  Going from mm to mil (or the other way around) fixed it for me.

I'm having a similar issue, and have had it on about 2/10 components. A specific example is this TO-263 package:

When I go to map it, the preview window comes up empty, as shown here:

    Any ideas?

This just works for me so check:- that your STEP file is stored in a location controlled by your steppath. You have an open filename.dra or filename.brd, you are not running the base release (Ideally the latest hotfix).
