Accessing Symbol User Defined Properties in a Board File

Hi.  I'm trying to access user defined properties at the drawing level on a symbol after it's been placed in a board file.  Is this possible?  None of the properties show up on the symbols in the board file.  I'm wondering if it's the way they are defined that's causing problems.

The properties were added to the symbol .dra like this:

axlDBCreatePropDictEntry("Custom_Prop" , "string", "designs")

axlDBAddProp( axlDBGetDesign() list( "Custom_Prop" "Some Text"))

I cannot find a way to access these properties from within the board file after they have been placed.  Any suggestions?

Thanks for any help

Chris.
