Issue With Complex Paste Mask and Solder Mask Transferring Into The PCB File

Rick T

Greetings all,

I have created a footprint with two separate padstacks. Each padstack is using flash files for both the paste mask and solder mask as each requires multiple openings for each pad. The flash files look good and even viewing the completed .DRA file I can see that the solder and paste masks look good. The issue is that when I netlist and place the part into the board file both the solder and paste mask layers are now identical to the single copper pad. They no longer contain multiple shapes, but just the one solid shape the same size as the copper pad.

What am I missing?

Thanks in advance.

You could try making the paste and mask as shape symbols rather than flash symbols and use the shapes in the pad stack.

I believe flash symbols are primarily used on negative planes.

Shape symbols can only be one shape and can't contain either multiple voids or shapes as are needed.

You could always build you shapes into the footprint instead of a padstack. As far as a flash symbol I think you could make just about anything you want as long as the geometry of the flash gets defined to someone you could have it on your board. It's not just for negatives.

Apparently you need to "flash_convert 'device$$.dra' " in the library and then "flash_convert 'board$$.brd' ". Then while in the board file you need to >update symbols of the package from the library. Not sure why you need to flash convert the board file if the device has been. I will look at creating the complex solder and paste mask in the device and not the padstacks, because unless you run the flash_convert on each new board that uses this footprint it will not be correct.
