How to do "arbitrary" measurement between 2 points / components

Back in 17.2-2016 I could measure between 2 grid point or selected components or any feature of interest. Same behaviour between viewer and the full design tool

In the 17.4-2019 (free viewer) it just tries to be smart about it  and it can only measure the closest distance between 2 selectable objects. For example, I cannot measure centre-centre spacing between 2 vias. I can only calculate via the x,y coordinate read-out or properties panel. It's kind of inferior in every way. The older version if I asked for a measure between 2 vias, it gave me the coordinates of both, the Dx and Dy distance, regular distance and Manhattan distance, the drill hole size for both, etc. The new tool gives me nothing useful, either in the actual measure or the properties pane.

Is this just the way it is now or is there a way I can over-ride this. The manual only notes one way to measure and that's it. Has it become a pay feature now? If that's the case, it would be very annoying as I have to fire up the full tool just to view/verify the layout and chew up licenses that could otherwise be used for actual layout work.
