Allegro - Tip of the Week: Do you know that you can have your design autosaved at regular intervals?

You can set the autosave feature in your design, which helps in saving your work periodically. The key variables to autosave the database are present under the File_management section in User Preferences Editor. You can open this using Setup > User Preferences.

  • autosave: Set to enable autosaving

This option must be set before starting the layout editor.

  • autosave_dbcheck: Set to run a quick database check before an autosave

By default, this option is turned off to save time. It requires a restart.

  • autosave name: Specifies the base name for the autosave file

The default name is AUTOSAVE. Do NOT provide a file extension. The layout editor will use the appropriate extension based on the type of database under edit. It requires a restart.

  • autosave time: Specifies the autosave intervals

The default time is 30 minutes. The minimum is 10 minutes, and the maximum is 300 minutes. It requires a restart.

For instance, a user works for 8 hrs and save time given to 20 min. By the end of the time, there would be 24 copies. Is there a way where only the last 3 backups can be saved and the rest all are auto-deleted? which would reduce space and also confusion.

use variable ads_autosaverevs and specify the number of versions you want to maintain for AUTOSAVE database files.

You can find this variable in Setup > User Preferences > File management > Versioning

Can the location of autosave be set to a fixed path? For example, the design location is a far away network drive, a 100mb design will take long to save with every autosave, interrupting workflow.  Could the autosave be set to a location on C drive?

i think the autosaved files can be located at no other locations but in your working directory only. if u need the autosaved files to be found in the c drive, the working directory of your design needs to be in the c drive as well.

    There are 2 challenges here

    1. The minimum save time is 10min and in many cases it may not be sufficient. Are there any future updates planned to reduce the minimum save time ?

    2. As the other user mentioned there should be an option where the user can define the path where to save the files.

FYI: Other popular EDA tool has both above mentioned features.
