Are flash pads necessary?

ISA7

I am converting boards that were laid out in OLD Pads.

When I bring the board into Cadence it creates flash pads.

During conversion, the exported library spits out pad1 pad2 pad3 pad4 and so on... as well as flashpad1 flashpad2 flashpad3 flashpad4...

Those pad names do not coincide with our naming conventions so I am forced to rename everything.

Ultimately, my question is, can I just delete the flash pads?

I have laid out boards that do not use them and they worked just fine.

One of the few things I found about flash pads is that they were used depending on if you were creating negative or positive artwork.

I could be way off base, but if anybody could provide some clarity that would be great.

Also, I have tried to just create a new flash pad but I do not understand how to successfully do this.

If what I need to do is create a new one, what is the best method or is there already information on this somewhere?

Flash pads are mainly used for negative artworks so if you don't use these then you don't need flash symbols. In most cases now you can just define the regular pad and ignore the thermal and anti pad defintion since dynamic shapes are driven by the spacing rules in Constraint Manager. That being said there are some instances where flash symbols can be used for pastemask or soldermask openings (chequer board style on a large square pad for example) so you may still need flash symbols for this type of opening.

The anti-pad is the void area (shown as the blue annular ring in the diagram below) between the pad and the copper of the plane. It should be designed so that it maintains the impedance of a transmission
