What is the difference between plane and conductor layers?

Hi, 

I am working on a 4 layers pcb with allegro, and Top Bottom are for signals, middle two layers are ground. I tried to use impedance value given by allegro, but there is a big difference if I set middle layers as conductor or plane in stack. 

I don't understand why the change of denfinition can result such a difference, I mean anyway, it still is a layer of metal. From manufacturing side, I couldn't see a difference if I define it as conductor or plane.

I assum the calculation of impedance is carried out differently, but exactly how, could someone give some ideas?

    Both conductor & Planes are copper layers. The main difference is the planes have copper flooded completely while in signal layer that's not the case. Some blogs on cadence has detailed explanation.

    Thank you Schulz, do you mean conductor copper layer usually doesn't have copper poured on the whole area, instead only signal traces on it ? So in that case, the copper above it will have a different GND reference?
