How do you position the text for the pin number?

I'm starting to create a library for my first board using Allegro, and I want to start off making footprints that I won't have to change later on.

How do you position the text for the pin number and why? Do you size and position the text so that it fits inside the copper pad? Do you offset it to the side of the pad? Every method I try is extremely tedious, for example, picking the text size so it fits, and then offsetting it.

Is this text actually used for anything useful? Is it just used for making assembly drawings and hidden at all other times? If that is the case, then I will probably position it inside the pad outline. If you do it this way, do you bother offsetting the text so it is centered inside the pin outline?

Thanks!

I put the text in the middle of the pin and adjust the size so it is easily readable for reviewing the footprint.

When the component is placed on the board, the custom text size is not carried over.

The only time I have an issue with text size is when setting net schedules. The pin numbers are shown and block viewing. I reduce the text size on the board for these.

Pin number text is really only for your own reference. It's position does not matter, unless you want to include it on an assembly drawing. Usually the pin 1 indicator is sufficient on drawings. Trying to number all pins would clutter up the drawing too much, IMO.

I have never once moved or resized the text from the default location. Slight smile
