Allegro – Tip of the week: Protecting alias/function keys

Is there is a way to prevent users from creating aliases that are named the same as Cadence aliases, or the ones originated from site admins?

To protect (for example, read-only) alias/funckey assignments, use the alias_protect command.

The alias_protect command lets you assign an alias the “read-only” status, effectively disabling the ability to unalias/change a command.

To apply alias protection:

  • Type alias_protect at the tool’s user interface console command.
  • To apply protection to an aliased command, type -y and the alias name.
  • The defined alias will now be marked read-only and cannot be unaliased.

In this example, alias protection is applied to the F3 alias for add connect:

Command> alias_protect -y F3

Once this is protected, you get the following message while trying to assign F3 to some other command or unaliasing F3.

The F3 alias is marked read-only, not changed.

To remove alias protection:

  • Type alias_protect at the tool’s user interface console command.
  • To apply protection to an aliased command, type -n and the alias name.
The defined alias can now be unaliased.

Command> alias_protect -n F3
