Database diary journal

Afaik it is stored as an attachment.

your answers confirm what I thought.

I need to export to a text file first and if there are no records there is no db_diary.txt created, so just test if the file exists.

Don't get confused with the name 'db_diary.txt'.  It is not a text file but an attachment in the BRD file.

So there is no need to export anything, just check if the attachment is present and contains something.
