Routing Tip: Group Routing with Vias

VVRD
VVRD over 1 year ago

When routing multiple connections simultaneously, vias can be added using various patterns. A double- click initiates the via placement, which remains in a temporary state until confirmed. Alternatively, right-clicking and selecting Add Via does the same.

The control trace dictates the via padstack and placement, directly aligning with its path without introducing additional points. Other traces may require extra points for an accurate via positioning.

Via patterns are oriented relative to the selected traces. The perpendicular pattern is the default, but the orientation adapts to the trace direction. For example, vias align horizontally for vertical traces and diagonally for diagonal traces.

The same padstack, determined by the control trace, is applied to all selected traces. Design rule checks may flag issues if the padstack is unsuitable for certain traces, often due to region differences.

Via spacing is measured from pad edge to pad edge. A default value of "0.0" relies on the via-to-via spacing constraint from the design rules. Custom spacing can be set by right-clicking, selecting Via Pattern > Spacing, and entering a new value. The tool retains 16 most recent values for quick access. If the specified spacing violates the minimum via-to-via constraint, the constraint takes precedence.

Six distinct via patterns are available for group routing: Perpendicular, Stagger, Diagonal Left, Diagonal Right, Out Taper, and In Taper. To cycle through these patterns, right-click and select Via Pattern > Next Pattern. Alternatively, choose a specific pattern from the right-click menu.

For quicker access, you can assign a function key to this command (for example, "funckey b pop via pattern next").

Note that taper patterns may produce the same results as diagonal patterns depending on the position of the control trace.
