3D canvas versus 3DX canvas

I can't figure out the relation between the 3D canvas and the 3DX canvas and how you're supposed to use them.

1. How do I import a STEP model, such as a heat sink, in the 3DX canvas? Only way I've found is to use the 3D canvas for the import and then the imported model seems to appear in the 3DX canvas as well.

2. A 3D-model of a symbol is sometimes only visible in the 3D canvas and not in the 3DX canvas. Why?

    1. In the 3dx canvas firstly enable the Model Mapper from the View menu. Then in the Visibility pane click on the component icon (looks like an IC) then click on the + icon to add a model. Once the step model is added go to the Model Mapper, select the mechnical tab and choose your model then adjust the values at the bottom of the model mapper window.

    2. Difficult to say without seeing more detail. Could be a visibility thing. The 3dx canvas is the new 3d canvas. This is the new function being developed by Cadence. The old style 3d canvas will eventually be removed.

I don't seem to have a Model Mapper entry in the View menu:

     '

    I'm using Allegro X Designer 23.1-2023 S004 [4/25/2024] Windows SPB 64-bit Edition.

That explains it then. The model mapper wasn't added until 24.1. If you can't upgrade yet then the only way is using your current method (the old 3d canvas).

Ah, ok. Thanks. I think we're about to upgrade in the coming month or so.
