Silkscreen effect impedance on traces?

VishnuVRD

Hello experts,

Does Silkscreen on very high speed traces effect it's impedance? If yes, silkscreen is nothing but soldermask in different color (mostly white), how do we protect high speed traces from silkscreen?.

Thank you.

    Hi Visnu,

Indeed this is a common problem. RF designs in the GHz domain avoid both silkscreen an soldermask on these traces for exactly this reason. You will find on the web many images where the RF lines are plated with gold (usually with controlled thickness) to keep every single parameter under control. 5G for example is known to be very delicate and not all board houses can handle it.

    I hope this helps.
