How do you manage large pin count parts?

When working with large pin count parts like processors, FPGAs, and DDRs, one of the challenges is the creation of schematic symbols. It becomes an exhaustive task especially when creating such large pin symbols from scratch. A librarian would need to segregate pins as per the functionality. Now, you might wonder:

  • If the schematic symbol needs to be a split symbol
  • How to manage power, ground, or unused pins
  • How to accommodate pins on the symbol so that it fits into the schematic page

How do you approach this?

  1. Split symbols with pins clubbed together based on functionality
  2. Separate symbols for power/ground sections
  3. A single symbol with all pins
  4. One large symbol with hidden or implicit power, ground, and NC pins
  5. Any other method
