move / place a component to specific xy location?

I'm trying to move some mounting holes to a specific xy-location. I'm using version 16.

I've searched online, searched the help files, searched this forum. But I can't seem to find the answer. I just started using OrCAD, so i don't know my way around the tool all that well.

My best attempt so far is : use show element to get the current xy location. Then I can use the pick command to select the exact center of the component (if I just click on the component, OrCAD doesn't select the component's center. grrr! It moves the component relative to where I click on it). Finally I can use the mouse to move the component where i need it.

This is a hideous procedure. There has got to be a better way. What's the best/quickest way to move a component to a specific xy location?

If you go into the move command (edit - move) then select the component you want, right click - options - rotation point - boy center, then move your cursor to the command line and type x co-ordinate y co-ordinate. This places the symbol exactly where you want it.

E.g if you want to move your mounting hole to x1500 y1500 you would type x 1500 1500.

You probably need to run through the tutorials... :)

Anyway, Allegro & OrCAD PCB will let you move components by:

    1) Symbol origin

    2) Pin origin

    3) Body Center

    4) User Pick

Sounds like you have that 4th option selected.  Next time you move shuffle the Options window out and look.  Change the pick origin and try again.

Also, be sure and look at the bottom right hand screen corner  -- you will see the x,y location.  You can set a coarse grid while placing to get the parts located where you want and snap to a grid.

I figured there was a way to change the pick origin. I usually have a pcb designer laying out the tool, but he is out on vacation, so I've had to dive into OrCAD...I've used PADS in the past, so I am not completely new to pcb design, just can't figure out how to accomplish what I need in OrCAD.

When I right-click to bring up the options window, I cannot set a "pick origin" but only a "rotation point" The options are similar. When I change from user pick to body center, it works as expected. But when I pick the next symbol, its right back to "user pick"

I do have a training manual from EMA. It does not mention how to change the pick origin...Couldn't find anything in the online help, either.

The right click menu is not the options window, If you look to the right hand side there are three fold away menus (if they are not there you can access them by view - windows. The menus are options, visibility and find). These menus are normally used during every command. If you press show all (view - windows - show all) these menus will pop out.

During the move command the options tab gives you the choices mentioned previously. The online help from start - programs - cadence - cadence help is really useful. Another way is to press F1 whilst hovering over the command you need help on. ie Move will bring up help on the move command (including the options tab).
