Simple things?

 I am new to Allegro PCB with most of my experience being in the Protel design area.  A couple of very simple things to do in Protel seem to be impossible in Allegro (at least so far to me).  I could use some help with these:

1. Selecting a component in the PCB editor by refdes

2.  Actually getting the autoplacement to do anything

3.  Finding a "real life" design example in the tutorials and documentation

 My main issue is #1, since I gave up on #2 and moved the parts manually.  I am surprised at the complexity of the user interface on this tool and was looking for a quick reference guide or similar.

     I agree.  Don't take my comments as anything other than the usual gripes about getting to know a tool.  As we all know, the best user interface is the one of the tool that you have used for many years.  I recommended this tool chain for our company having extensive experience in Orcad, a small level of experience with Specctra, and zero with PCB Design.  The benefits far outweigh the small amount of pain we have gone through getting to know the tool.

    I want to thank you for the quick inputs to this forum, we are now almost up to the level that we were on Altium, and only in a few hours.
