Variants in Design Entry

Hi,

I have one variant for my board but I want two types of load status.  One needs to be "Do Not Install" but the other needs to be labeled "Development Only".  I'd like to get both of these types of loading into one variant to make it easier on the procurement folks.  Is it possible?  In Variant Editor when I chage one component to "Dev Only" it changes every component in the list.  It doesn't appear I can have two load types at one time.

 Thanks,

I am assuming you are using CIS with Part Manager.  Without it , it's about the same.

Add a user property called anything, like, "INSTALLTYPE" to the parts you care about. Make sure they have a value of "Development Only".  Make the property VALUE visible on the schematic and it will show up when the schematic prints.

Also, in the BOM (thus the comment about Part Manager) add your user property to the selected property list and you can have it show up in the BOM as well.  The not present parts as they are called in OrCAD won't show up in the BOM listing.

By the way, you can control variants this way as well.  INSTALLTYPE might have a value of "Not Installed".   This is an older method to do BOM control and it allows you to retain the ideal value of the part should it be needed (e.g.: 10K resistor, 0805, 5%, Not Installed") instead of guessing what the value is or running back to the schematic database in the lab.

I did *all* my BOMs/schematics this way without ever needing part manager to help.  I use PM now but like the results of the old method better.

    Hope this sparks some insight.
