OrCAD 16.0 Demo issue

Using a PCBEditor Demo I've found an 'error' if it was not made intentionally. Clicking on Route > Route Automatic we get an error message. "SPECCTRA quit unexpextedly with an exit code of 1" The corresponding "specctra.log"complains about licensing error. But if we click on 'SPECCTRA Demo for OrCAD' it runs without error in Demo mode.

My question is: Why the "Route Automatic" option is enabled in PCB Editor Demo if it can't be used anyway?

thanks

    Hi

That error message is usually a result of operating the software in a folder that has white spaces in the folder name. Try moving the board to a folder like c:\test Also avoid white spaces in the board name.

    BillZ,

Thank you for the quick reply, but I have no white spaces in my folder/board name.

    Thanks,

It's also worth checking that there are no spaces in any folder names in the pathlist - right back to the root folder (Cadence tools don't like spaces *anywhere* - even in printer names).

I have had the same problem and not just with the demo version. Here are the lines that I find in the logfile using the demo version:

    # <<ERROR:>> Unrecognized argument: C:/OrCAD_data/Test/allegro/board2.dsn
    # No graphics will be displayed.
    # Design Name Davies_board21128_0\design
    # Batch File Name: pasde.do
    # Startup: File Not Found : Davies_board21128_0\design
    #
    # <<ERROR:>> Could not open design file.
    #            The file may be corrupted or unaccessible.

No spaces anywhere in the path! (There is a space in the name of the printer but I have never had trouble printing.)  With the full version this error is only a minor inconvenience because I can use File > Export> Router and run SPECCTRA standalone. Unfortunately the export function is not available in the demo version so you are stumped.

I have taught classes with OrCAD PCB Designer and Route > Route Automatic works for some students but not for others. I have no idea why (but did not think of checking filenames for spaces). This is all on Windows XP and the licences are networked, in case that is an issue.

This might be related to your user names. The tools don't like spaces in user windows logins. The work around is to add an new environment variable called CDS_MPS_SESSION and add a username without spaces.
