Dielectric Constant of Conductor Copper Layer

Hi All,

Setup --> Cross Section

The "Layout Cross Section" window allows "Autosolve Mode" to calculate the trace characteristic impedance given all the parameter values ( thickness, dielectric constant, conductivity etc).

May I know the correct value to put for "Dielectic Constant" of a Conductor Copper layer?

Should this value be infinity?

Problem is that when I put a very high value, the impedance goes down to almost zero (which isnt true in practice)

Thanks All

    Hi,

    The best thing to do is to ask your PCB manufacturers for the characteristics of the different materials. You could also go for standard materials and have dielectric constants from that.

    The value for the dielectric constant on the copper layers in the cross section form is the value of the pre-preg material that flows around the copper traces.  I.e. the dielectric of the parts of the layer that aren't copper.

    I couldn't find this earlier but here is a link to a paper I wrote on stack up settings for CDN Live 2006.  http://www.cdnusers.org/Portals/0/cdnlive/na2006/PNP/PNP_147/147_paper.pdf

     Excellent paper!  It was never clear that that's what was intended.  That change and the hidden trapezoidal setting did wonders.
