Solder Paste for BGAs

Olek

Is solder paste required for soldering of BGAs?

BGAs "pins" are solder alloy balls that melt during the soldering, so I wonder if solder paste is needed.

I'm creating footprint for the BGA (1mm pitch, 576 pins) and I wonder if the padstack pad on  solder paste layer should be defined.

In other words, should solder paste stencil have openings for BGA "pins"?

Yes.  Amount? That depends.  Check with your assembler on what they want.

Remember that not all BGAs use eutectic balls.
