Extremely slow OrCAD 16.0

My company has ~ 25 shared licenses (the license servers are located who-knows-where). It takes 3 minutes to get the first OrCAD screen from the time I first click my desktop icon! I had complained to our IT people: it used to be 6 minutes and they improved it to 3 minutes. I could live with the log-on delay, but every other action is also extremely slow. A simple DC Sweep simulation with a handful of components may take 30 seconds or so; the same simulation done using OrCAD 9.1 (a single shared license located on a local server) takes a couple of seconds. Any idea of what's causing that? I have the correct environment variables. Also I don't think we are running out of licenses, because any time I check there are only 4-5 in use. In any case, it seems the license server only handles the initial log-on. After that, the OrCAD software on my machine is doing all the computational stuff, right? So is 16.0 much slower than 9.1?

Since you probably cannot configure this, get your IT folks to setup CDS_LIC_FILE in the System Environment Variables and reference the license server with the port@host string. Also get them to add a CDS_LIC_ONLY variable with a value of 1. This will restrict the license search to only the CDS_LIC_FILE entry. that should fix the start up delay.

The next issue is, most likely down to a "client install". Chances are that your 9.1 installation had all the files locally on your machine, and that was fine. IT folks like a "client install" because it saves them time when installing but this costs the users every time the application runs because the application files have to be dragged over the network and that, most likely, is not sitting idle waiting for you to run a simulation! Get the installation changed to have everything local to your machine and everything should be fine, as it was in the past!

Thanks oldmouldy. I had previously entered the correct server addresses in the CDS_LIC_FILE variable. I tried your suggested CDS_LIC_ONLY variable and it did not seem to make any difference. But I can live with a long log-in time. The bigger problem is the very long time to do anything: 20-40 seconds for a schematic to show up when I click on the folder; 30-40 seconds for a simple simulation.

All the OrCAD files (Capture, PSpice, Libraries, etc) are all loaded on my local drive, in an "OrCAD 16.0" folder in my C drive. However, I notice that there are no OrCAD 16.0 folders/files in the Programs folder. But there is an "OrCAD 9.1" folder in my Programs folder, and this is the one that executes nice and fast. Is this the problem?
