What is the maximum length of Allegro artwork filenames ? Are there reserved characters ?

 Is the length controllable ?

The root film names are limited to 18 characters however, with the 16.2 release, you can add a prefix and or suffix to extend the length. While Allegro will permit longer film names, your OS generally limits filenames (including the extension) to 256 characters.

You can control the prefix and suffix names (not length) in the artwork GUI or by adding the properties at the root design level.

    ARTWORK_PREFIX =
    ARTWORK_SUFFIX =

Allegro's default extension for film records is .art however you can control this with the variable:

     ext_artwork

found in the env preferences editor under File_management/versioning

    Dave,

It used to be 18 characters max.  Not sure about the restricted characters, but probably follow the rest of the Allegro app and also you would need to be careful about the OS dependencies.  As for controlling the length, I don’t think there is a variable you can set to control the length.  If your game, you could always develop your own artwork interface in Skill (with built-in limits) and overload the artwork command with your own.

    Regards,
    Charlie

     Charlie,

A quick test here shows it is indeed 18 characters, more than sufficient for an artwork filename especially with the prefix control in 16.2.

I run into this error when I attempt to copy an existing artwork record to modify and create a new record - Allegro adds  "copy_of_" which then reduces the effective filename limit to 10 characters.

    (/rant off)

At least I understand what is the issue now.

    Thanks!

you can edit the film names in the artwork form by selecting the film name, pick the name again and then move your cursor slightly. This will put you into take edit mode where you can change the name.

Problem is, you cannot copy an artwork layer having a name longer than 10 characters as it produces an error.
