Unable to launch Allegro PCB Symbol Editor (sporadic)

I've been having this sporadic problem for a few months now. After launching the Project Manager and opening my current project, i'll try to launch the symbol editor after changing my flow to Library Management. The editor will open, then the screen turns white and instantly closes and i'm back at the PM. Other times, the editor will open but i will get a message that the software has encountered a problem and must exit. I've changed projects and lauched it sucsessfully some times but other times the same thing has happened. I've also tried to go into it without changing the flow and keeping it at Board Design. We've re-installed Allegro 16.2 and checked my environment variables and they seem ok. This has happened with only Outlook running. I originally thought it might have something to do with streaming music but that doesn't seem to be the case. I'm running a fairly new Dell 6300 laptop with 4 GB memory.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Steve.

     Steve,

Try renaming your local PCBENV directory and then reopen the editor. It's possible there is a corruption in the allegro.ini. Renaming the PCBENV will remove any ini, geo, and your local env from the equation. If that solves the problem you can then look at each individial file inside of the pcbenv.

Thanks Rik. Last week i renamed my local env file but didn't do what you suggested. I still exited out the same way. I just tried going into the symbol editor and it went in fine this time. Don't know if i mentioned this but this doesn't seem to happen going into Allegro Layout. only the PCB symbol editor. I'll try what you are suggesting but can't at the moment. I'm trying to get a job out and all my parts have been made to this point. Thanks. Steve

     Hi Steve,

Rik is suggesting to rename the \pcbenv directory, not the env file. Give that a shot.

Also, in weird cases like this, I've sometimes had luck installing a hotfix and that made problems go away.

    Good luck!

Rik, i finally tried what you were suggesting (renaming the PCBENV folder) and that didn't seem to help either. Today, i haven't been able to get into Alegro Layout either. i've changed the project and have gotten into Layout initailly but on subsequent times, i've crashed out. So today i logged out and back in and then was able to get into the original design Allegro Layout. Go figure! I'm going to try dbdoctor on the pcb (can't hurt huh?). Other than that we're at a loss. Any other suggestions?
