Symbol creation

Hello

New to creating symbols in PCB EDITOR Ver. 16.2

Confused on what data (outlines) that needs to be put into the symbol for the pick n place machine to find body center.

Once the component outline is placed do I also need to place a Place boundry top as well?

I have reviewed a posted article on this which says: the body center information is driven by the calculated center point of the shape defined on package geometry place bound top. However when I check a Cadence supplied library symbol, I see no such thing?

If you do not create a place bound during symbol creation one will be created for you, with the extents based on the pins in the symbol.  When you place the symbol in a board design the automatically created place bound will use the default height found in Setup >Design Parameters; Design Tab -> Symbol section.

Another avenue that I've seen taken is to place a small filled shape or a set of cross hairs using lines where you want the center to be on the PACKAGE GEOMETRY/BODY_CENTER class/subclass.

You should discuss with your board vendor and fab house what they would want.
I am sure there are others here that can provide reccomendations as well.

Place Bound(s) are used for Package to Package DRCs, as Rik says you will get one automatically when teh symbol is compiled if you don't specifically have one.

The standard Component Report in PCB Editor, reports the location of the (0, 0) position of the symbol from when it was was created, typically, this would be pin 1 for through hole and symbol center for surface mount. You can create a custom report that uses SYM_CENTER_X and SYM_CENTER_Y values rather than the SYM_X and SYM_Y values, if required. In general, the assembly house will take the component location data that you provide and process it accordingly for their needs, You need to inform them what convention of location data you are providing them with.
